ICD-10-CM FY 2027 changes are incorporated in CoderCoach
The FY 2027 ICD-10-CM update takes effect October 1, 2026 and applies to encounters and discharges through September 30, 2027. It’s built into CoderCoach, so your team practises the code set they’ll be reporting from day one. Highlights include:
Ch. 2 · Neoplasms
Secondary neoplasm sites
New codes for secondary malignant neoplasms of the larynx (C78.31), pharynx (C78.32), and oral cavity (C79.83).
Ch. 9 · Circulatory
Cardiomyopathy specificity
Expanded codes, including familial-genetic dilated cardiomyopathy and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy.
Ch. 10 · Respiratory
Odontogenic sinusitis
New J34.83- codes identify sinusitis of odontogenic origin.
Ch. 13 · Musculoskeletal
Plantar fasciitis & osteomyelitis
Plantar fasciitis (M67.A0-) now distinguishes the affected foot; osteomyelitis gains site and laterality detail.
Ch. 4 · Endocrine
Postprocedural hypoglycemia
New E89.83- codes, including post-bariatric hypoglycemia.
Ch. 15 · Pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancy
More specific ectopic pregnancy coding by site.
Ch. 21 · Health status
Adult underweight BMI
Expanded BMI codes for underweight adults.
Conventions & guidelines
Notes and Official Guidelines
Updated Excludes, Code first, and Use additional code notes (for example at D05), and guideline Section I.C.17 now addresses genetic disorders.
This is a summary of highlights, not the full list. For every new, revised, and deleted code, see the official FY 2027 ICD-10-CM files from CDC/NCHS (opens in a new tab) and the CMS ICD-10 update page (opens in a new tab).
The challenge
Coding quality is a workforce challenge — not just a training one
Most HIM managers can report an overall data quality score. Few can identify which coder struggles with comorbidity capture or principal diagnosis sequencing — and fewer still can show leadership a clear picture of measurable improvement over time. A platform built around competency data changes that conversation entirely.
The heatmap maps every coder across the CoderCoach Competency Framework™ — a structured set of dimensions covering the full scope of inpatient and outpatient coding practice.
- Full competency breakdown across your whole team, in one view
- Expert · Proficient · Developing · Needs Work colour bands
- Filter by individual coder or view the full team
- Team averages and coaching priorities surfaced automatically
Individual insight
Pinpoint opportunities for growth. Build targeted education plans.
- Detailed performance breakdown for every team member
- Growth opportunities surfaced across every coding dimension the framework tracks
- Individual education plans generated from identified knowledge gaps
- Plans update automatically as the coder's performance improves
Trends
Demonstrate improvement — month over month
- Month-over-month score change for every team member
- Team average benchmarked alongside individual coders
- Supports performance reviews and governance reporting
- Identifies coders making rapid progress — and those who need additional support
How it works
How CoderCoach drives improvement
CoderCoach is built on Behaviour-Driven Education — improvement comes from purposeful, gap-targeted practice, not generic training content.
Assess — establish a competency baseline
Structured assessments and timed tests measure each coder's accuracy across every dimension of the CoderCoach Competency Framework™. Managers get an objective, evidence-based picture of the whole team from day one.
Practice — behaviour-driven, gap-targeted
Coders are directed to the case types that target their specific areas for growth. A standards-grounded Q&A assistant helps them work through complex coding decisions, with every answer referenced to the official standards.
Plan — education plans that evolve with the coder
Each coder's Individual Education Plan is generated from their current gap data and updates automatically as their performance improves. The plan always reflects where they are now — not where they started.
Track — demonstrate results to leadership
Month-over-month trends show measurable improvement by coder and across the team. Managers have the data to present workforce progress to hospital leadership, in a format that makes sense outside of HIM.
Standards alignment
Grounded in the standards your coders actually work with
Every case, assessment, and piece of coding guidance is anchored to the official classification and guidelines of the jurisdiction — so what coders practise is what they will be held to in production.
ICD-10-CM
Diagnosis coding
The U.S. clinical modification of ICD-10 for diagnosis coding, maintained by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. Used across inpatient, outpatient, and physician settings in the United States.
ICD-10-PCS
Procedure coding
The U.S. procedure coding system for inpatient hospital settings, maintained by CMS. A highly granular, seven-character, multi-axis structure that rewards deep structural knowledge.
ICD-11
International classification
The World Health Organization's eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases, the international standard for disease classification for health systems adopting it worldwide.
Coding in Canada?
The CoderCoach Canadian Edition is built on ICD-10-CA and CCI, licensed from CIHI, with DAD and NACRS guidance and province-aware coder profiles.
